The Bulletin Panama reports:
“The full National Assembly of Panama approved, in third debate, the draft law by which the International Agreement for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments from Ships, 2004 (BWM) seeks to prevent the uncontrolled discharge of ballast water and sediments from ships”.
Approving the “draft law” – presumably – means ratifying the Convention!? Finland has done the same (presumably). Hopefully we are up for some great news before or during MEPC 70.
Finally some good news from IMO. Indonesia have ratified the 2004 Ballast Water Convention at the IMO Assembly session held at the moment. There seem to be some confusion as to the significance of this. According to the information I have, the Convention stood at 32.93% (this morning after Morocco signed last night!). Indonesia adds another 1.14% – which should bring us up to 34.07% – only 0.93% from the challenge. However – the first informal information claims the Convention is ratified – and will enter into force 24-11-2016. I think not! Any one any wiser?

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) have photocatalytic properties. Thin catalyst films with the ability to create electron-hole pairs which generate hydroxyl radicals when exposed to UV radiation have been applied to various products where hygiene is essential. The technology has also been applied to products such as thermal flasks to avoid unwanted taste and smell. This project will continue to develop in InNano AS.

Mentum’s initiative on future fuels in the maritime sector is attracting wide interest.
Our project on fuel development rooted in nano-technology and inspired by the ever-increasing restrictions facing the shipping industry through the MARPOL Annex VI Regulations was recognised by BBC when they went looking for teasers to promote their Million Dollar Intern – a new show on BBC Entertainment tapping into the creativity and dynamism of a new generation of young entrepreneurs.

Mentum recently facilitated the final meso-scale test program of the Sea-Lix turbine in the open flow (tidal) application. The tests where undertaken in collaboration with the cavitation laboratory at MARINTEK. The cavitation tunnel offer considerable flexibility for tests of this nature allowing performance over a wide range of water velocities to be addressed over a short space of time.
The test results will be applied to verify the turbine CFD model work. Mentum is planning a continuation of the turbine test programme looking at performance in a pressurised application (pipe).
Mentums introduction of the of the Sea-Lix tidal/ hydropower turbine to Kjeller Innovation AS triggered interest! Sea-Lix’ list of shareholders now include Kjeller Innovation. Kjeller Innovation is owned by a consortium of institutions, private as well as public, with a common interest in applying science and innovations to create sustainable businesses. Owners/ partners include Statoil Technology Invest AS, Norwegian Defence Research and Institute for Energy Technology among others. Mentum have worked closely with Kjeller Innovation on a number of projects over many years. Getting Kjeller Innovation on-board strengthens the Sea-Lix projects and opens many doors!
This project roots back to 2007 when the idea of utilising tidal currents in particular in the same way as standardised wind turbines are used. Tidal current energy conversion concepts are often tailored to a particular location
Mentum has developed an innovative electrolysis membrane cell introducing new materials allowing alternative assembly methods improving performance, cost-efficiency as well as operational window.
The starting-point for the development was to enable the cell to use seawater as an electrolyte without any form of pre-treatment. The main challenge related to this is the presence of Magnesium in seawater taking part in the electrochemical reactions and forming a substrate of the mineral form of Magnesium Hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) or Brucite as it often is referred to. This tends to clog conventional membrane cells. The new development reduces the impact of Brucite.
Thermo-Service specializes in engineering, construction, consulting, installation and supervision of cargo hold insulation and other installation works on refrigerated cargo vessels (reefers). The activities came to an halt in 2004 due to international recline in the building of reefers. In 2010 this market is now returning to life to serve and an increasing demand for the services Thermo-Service once provided arrives. Visit Thermo-Service.
NOFO, the North Sea oil spill contingency Organisation provides funding for Mentum in the development of applied Non-Chemical Oil Dispersion concept.
Mentum is developing a strategy for the dispersion of oil-in-water debris following oil spill combat operations. An initial phase was undertaken in 2006 suggesting a certain potential in effectively dispersing oil-in-water without the use of chemicals. The results also suggested a reduction of the presence of hydrocarbons following treatment. The technology has since been refined and efficiency improved. NOFO is now co-funding a second phase addressing the dispersion application in particular. Tests are planned for March and April.
