Merit Maritime Innovations
Merit Maritime Innovation AS (MMI) is a joint venture that was established in 2008 to further develop the Industrialised Ship Recycling (ISR) – a concept arriving from an internal project within Mentum. Activities within MMI have since expanded to cover other areas as well. Currently MMI is engaged in developing flexible piping solutions for ships engine room applications. MMI is also developing a catalytic technology for the removal of NOx from the exhaust gas of combustion engines.
ISR:
The ISR concept in its final stage is a complete system for ship recycling where
obsolete ships give birth to new vessels with minimal impact on the local and global environment. It comprises of highly industrialized, safe and efficient ship breaking procedures involving advanced machinery and skilled personnel and metallurgical processes allowing the reproduction of high quality steel from ship scrap. Dismantling is performed in tailored facilities preventing pollution of soil and sea. Production of steel provides a significant reduction in emissions where high quality ship scrap feed modern onsite steel mills using only a fraction of the energy compared to traditional steel production from iron ore. Thus, the ISR concept achieves a significant reduction in the emissions of green house gases.
